WHY DID WE REFORMULATE OUR POWDERS?
We reformulated our powders to significantly increase performance but still meet our safety standards. The new powders have better payoff, which is the intensity of the color upon application, and are long-wearing. Additionally, the new powders are manufactured in the USA.
WHAT MAKES THE NEW MAKEUP POWDERS UNIQUE?
Our powders deliver on four key criteria. We call them the ‘4 Ps’:
• PAYOFF: one-swipe full-color intensity. We select safer, artist-grade pigments that deliver rich color payoff.
• PRECISION: Our formula goes through a triple-milling process that grinds the ingredients to the most perfect, most precise particle size. The result is silky-smooth, blendable powders with even application.
• PERFORMANCE: long-wearing color. Our formula contains ‘Butterpowder,’ which is a natural binding ingredient that helps the powders attach to skin and stay on all day.
• PURITY: we screen every batch of our powders for heavy metals, to ensure we deliver higher-performing, significantly safer formulas. Additionally, all the new powder formulas are vegan, and the compacts are made with FSC-certified paper.
The eyeshadow, bronzer and highlighter compacts come with removable mirrors so that the package is recyclable and the mirror can be used separately later!
HOW ARE BEAUTYCOUNTER’S POWDERS SAFER THAN TRADITIONAL POWDERS?
We are very selective of the ingredients used in our formulations, in accordance with The Never List™. Additionally, we screen raw materials and our finished products to ensure they meet our strict safety standards. When it comes to colorants, out of the 153 cosmetic colorants allowed in the EU, and the 63 cosmetic colorants allowed in the US, Beautycounter prohibits the vast majority from being used in our products. We currently use 18 colorants in our cosmetics, 10 of which are “naturally-derived” and 8 of which are “synthetic” colorants. Through our rigorous screening and testing process, our commitment to transparent and ethical sourcing, and our proactive involvement at every step of the manufacturing process, we are able to fulfill our promise and provide you products that meet our standards of safety and performance.
WHAT IS BEAUTYCOUNTER’S PROCESS FOR SCREENING HEAVY METALS?
Heavy metals are naturally-occurring; therefore, some natural colorants carry the potential risk of heavy metal contamination. To help manage this risk, we are very selective with the colorants we use, and we test them rigorously. We test not only our pigments, but also each batch of our finished color cosmetic products to make sure they meet our stringent internal standards for safety.
DO THE NEW MAKEUP POWDERS CONTAIN TALC?
Yes, the new Beautycounter makeup powders contain talc. Talc is a highly prevalent ingredient in makeup powders in general because it is absorbent, an anti-caking agent, and a skin protectant. We also choose talc because when compared with similar ingredients with the same cosmetic function, talc has lower heavy metal levels. The cosmetic industry standards require that cosmetic grade talc not contain any asbestos material. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) reports that talc is safe to be used in cosmetics up to 100% as long as there is no damage to the epidermal layer of the skin. Further, Beautycounter tests our raw materials to ensure that all of our products are 100% free of asbestos.
HOW DOES BEAUTYCOUNTER ENSURE THAT THE MICA WE USE IS SOURCED ETHICALLY?
We have developed a Supplier Code of Conduct that helps us engage with our suppliers, and improve practices throughout the supply chain. As part of this process, we have ensured compliance by securing documentation from our mica suppliers that they do not engage in child labor practices.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE NEW POWDER HIGHLIGHTERS AND THE CREAM OPTIONS:
The differences between these two products are the finish and the application. Illuminating Cream Highlighter delivers a dewy sheen, while Luminous Powder Highlighter delivers a powder sheen. Illuminating Cream Highlighter can be applied directly to bare skin or on top of liquid foundation, and blended with fingertips. Luminous Powder Highlighter should be applied with a brush, such as Fan Powder Brush, on bare skin or on top of Mattifying Powder.
